It seems that most us over here at Dustlands are skeptics when it comes to fate and destiny!
Almost 50% of you, Free Hawks, voted that you didn't believe in fate! Check out the analysis after the jump...
It seems that the world we live in isn’t giving us much
evidence or motivation to believe in fate! With many people voting that fate isn’t
something they believe in, it’s a contrast to Saba – who herself is questioning
its existence, and her Pa, whose firm belief in it sets much of the story in
action.
However, there are a few believers out there. Yes, a quarter
of Free Hawks like to think that everything happens for a reason; it’s all laid
out for you before you take your first breath; nothing can be avoided! I
certainly think it’s something everybody ponders at some point in their life.
At school, I’m currently studying The Odyssey by Homer, and one of the main
themes running through the epic is that of fate. Is Odysseus fated to return
home, and if so, how does the help he receives, and his own skills, factor into
the equation? In the same way, I think it poses an interesting question for the
Dust Lands trilogy: the end of Book 3 – was it fated for Moira to write it as
she will, or not?
And then, of course, there’s those of us, myself among this number, who, honestly, have no idea. All though, at times, we like to give
it some thought, because if you temporarily believe in fate – it romanticises
everything! That first relationship? Meant to be. The hard break up? Couldn't have been avoided. Fate makes people feel better about the bad things that
happen to them.
But I think that the main argument for many people’s utter
confusion over the topic is that we all want to be in control of our own lives.
And if destiny exists, then we have no authority, even over ourselves. That’s a
pretty scary idea.
Maybe one day we’ll find out the truth. And hopefully,
within the next year, we’ll see whose side Saba takes: the destined, or the
non-believers!
