The Dust Lands trilogy has sold in 28 countries and whilst many of these sport variations of the same covers, there are other territories who have published completely new and beautiful covers of Blood Red Road!
There are, of course, the editions that most of us are familiar with:
This version is particularly effective because unlike most of the other covers, the font itself is in red, which of course is significant in terms of the title. It also has an image of the dusty and sand-storm-destroyed world Saba lives in. With Saba as the only figure on the front it paints her as a solitary figure on a journey. She is walking into the winds, showing her strength and determination to find her brother.
This was the first edition to publish in the UK. It's simplistic use of colour and shape grabs a reader's eye immediately! The spatter of blood helps illustrate the title and hints at plot, whilst Nero - a fan favourite - is also present. The black and red contrast beautifully.
My own personal favourites, these matching covers for the first two books in the trilogy have gorgeous desert colours incorporated to give that atmospheric feel. They are also quite romantic colours; deep pinks and bright yellows. Featuring Saba and Jack, unlike most covers with a person on the front, the silhouetted image is alluring and aesthetically pleasing. The typeface is also interesting; very new age.
And new for a few perhaps previously unseen!
This is a Korean cover for BRR. It's similar to the UK edition in that Nero features and there is a spattering of blood but the capital font is much more vivid - like a stamp. The background, textured like paper, is also interesting and something I haven't really seen before.
The German covers are also matching. The BRR one uses the graphic of Saba walking but it has an entirely different coloured background and font. These are more fantasy-styled and not as dark and gritty as the original version. Nevertheless, the continued styling for RH boosts this series' covers' effectiveness. Once again the silhouetted image of Saba is illustrative of the plot.
Next up are the Swedish covers! Now these ones are very colour-focused. We, of course, have the red-tinted cover for Blood Red Road, which interestingly features Saba's heartstone - something not seen on any other covers. The fist being made is also symbolic of Saba's fight. The dry, cracked earth in the background is cool and works well with the rolling red dust clouds. For Rebel Heart, the blue -tinged cover contrasts nicely with BRR.
Finally, it's the Serbian cover for BRR. It feels like you've just stumbled across a desert in a bookshop. The dull oranges and bold text create a very gritty, broken image, that is juxtaposed by the light, almost water-coloured, background behind Nero. Is he the last hope? Certainly, this cover is hot!
And so, now we'd like to hear your opinions! Which cover/ matching covers are your favourite? Vote in our poll below and leave us a comment telling us why you chose that one.

The international covers are my fave, because they're the most striking and alluring. They are the ones I personally own xx
ReplyDeleteI love the Serbian cover. It's so...real!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I prefer book covers without people (silhouettes & faces). I'm not sure why but I think abstract covers or thematic ones are very impressive. Liking the Korean cover and the first UK edition cover a lot!
ReplyDeleteI like the Korean cover the most. It's simple but significant. But I also do like our German covers, too.
