Poll Results Are In: North America is YOUR Dust Lands!

Our poll this week asked you where you thought the Dust Lands might be found on the world - or universe- map! North America was the top voted location!

It was definitely a popular choice, but there were many other options that were also considered by fans! Keep on reading to find out just why that is...

So, like a lot of well-known YA literature in circulation these days, BRR and RH are considered by fans to be set in North America. This is unsurprising because it is usually the immediate default location for many readers who aren't told the location, as it's such a familiar setting to them in fiction books. But that isn't to say that the setting is unfit for the series. Certainly not. There are obviously already desert areas in the US and what's to say Saba doesn't trek through an expanded one of the already existing deserts? Also, her dialect could be linked with Westernised culture.

Now Africa, and South America and Asia, I did find pleasantly surprising results for. It's definitely a unique setting that a lot of people probably don't consider. If you voted for one of these continents, why? I'm intrigued!

'Another world' was also a popular choice! Obviously, dystopian and PA genres are definitely 'in' right now and probably about 40% of these will be set on another planet, or in another universe, or even travelling through space itself, with no ground touchdown. Therefore, it would be natural for some to assume an alternate universe for the setting of Blood Red Road. I think it's a really cool concept!

Europe, too, was surprising, even getting only a few votes. Maybe because I live in England, I find it very hard to imagine my hometown of London becoming a Dust Land. However, on the continent, it's definitely a possibility; you only have to spend a few seconds in the Mediterranean to realise just how hot it can get over there!

And now for the two strangest sets of results. Australasia, what I would have thought to the most obvious choice because of it's current climate and desert-like conditions, and where I personally voted for, wasn't considered by anyone else! And then - I'm thinking (and hoping!) that this was a joke - one person who voted for other, believed the Dust Lands was set in the Arctic. I don't know...us Wreckers would have had to tear the planet apart pretty badly for the coldest, iciest place on Earth to become a desert!

It's really great to consider all the different places that Saba could potentially be exploring, and I, personally, am thankful for it not being a named destination in the books; it gives us readers a free reign! Perhaps with the release of the movie, we'll have some more clues as to where Moira herself had in mind whilst writing!
