Open Ended Question: Are there Holidays in Saba's world?

Hey Free Hawks! It's Monday again which means I have another open ended question for you to read and do whatever you please with.

So today being April Fools Day, ;) I started to think. Are there holidays in Saba's world? We know that they most likely celebrate each others birthdays, but what about the holidays that us Wreckers celebrate now? Christmas? Valentines Day? It does seem rather silly that Saba's family would deal with small things like St. Patrick's Day with the tension in her family. But what about before Saba's mother died? We know that Saba's mother was a ray of sunshine for Saba and her family, so maybe they did still celebrate some holidays we do now?

Leave your replies and let me know what you think. Do you think some of our holidays carried on into the Dustlands?

Happy April 1st everyone!

  1. I find it difficult to think they would. Maybe not even birthdays, because it's quite clear that the message is : nobody wants to be born into that world. Isn't that part of the meaning behind the books? - don't wreck the world because it will turn into a nasty place. From what I can see, there's not a lot to celebrate in the Dust Lands.
However, saying that, Saba's Pa is pretty pagan, as are his practices, and so maybe there are a few 'holidays' or special days. I would imagine that they'd be associated with the stars and seasons. Notice that Saba and Lugh's birthdays aren't called that - we are just told they were born at 'midwinter'. So clearly that's more of a focus point.
But, hey - maybe a wedding will be on the cards one day and we'll get to see if there's any celebrations ;)

  3. Hahaha, well you know who I'm rooting for! Although I don't think Saba would be too fussed about the idea of marriage. Actually, she definitely wouldn't. But a reader can dream, hey?!

  4. I like to think that some holidays will last forever. Maybe they'll change a bit or people won't know all about their history. Maybe they'll wonder why they're celebrating some days, maybe they'll come up with their own stories & explanations. Maybe not everyone will be celebrating the same holidays, maybe some people will think they are silly or useless. But yeah, I like to think that even in the Dustlands there are some people left who celebrate holidays like Christmas or Valentine's Day or Halloween or Easter.

  5. That's interesting. I definitely think if they were celebrated, the meaning or reason for the holiday would have been lost down the celebrations, so yeah I guess they would wonder what exactly they were celebrating.

  6. Yeah, and probably they would celebrate it differently than we do it now. As you said in your comment before people in Dustlands actually don't have much to celebrate. But I like to think that for example they'll make each other little presents or dance secretly because happy people from a lifetime before did it and because it can make the whole dark world look happier for a sec or two.
